Programming the 850 Keyfob

This procedure for 1993-1997 850 models only. For 1998 models, Volvo Scan Tool is required and you must go to the dealer. For 1999 to present models, Vadis/VIDA is required and you must go to the dealer.

For 1999 to preset models, an activation code is required to add additional fobs to your vehicle. This is a long code (about 20 digits) that is unique to each fob. When you buy a new fob from the dealer, the code comes on a piece of paper included with the fob. However, when you buy a used fob from ebay, it almost always does NOT come with the activation code. You will NOT be able to reprogram a used ebay fob without the activation code, period. So do not buy a used fob unless it comes with the code!

You must reteach the receiver ALL transmitters. This includes the one you are adding as well as any transmitters that already work with the vehicle!

Steps:

  1. Ensure that all doors, hood, and trunk are closed.
  2. Cycle ignition switch on/off 5 times within 10 seconds, leaving it on after the fifth time.
  3. Push either button on each transmitter (program one transmitter at a time within 15 seconds of the programming of the previous transmitter). All transmitters for the vehicle must be programmed at this time in order to work together with the receiver.
  4. Switch ignition off and test each transmitter to ensure it functions.
