The stock Bosch fuel injector o-rings don't last forever.
As the o-rings age they harden and shrink considerably due
to exposure to engine heat and fuel. When hardening and
shrinking occurs, leaks are often a result (sometimes detectable
by a raw fuel smell under the hood or inside the car).
The problem is that when you order "fuel injector
seals" from Volvo what you end up with are blue grommets
for the intake manifold. These grommets simply hold the
fuel injectors in place in the intake manifold and keep
dirt out. However
they are NOT the same thing as fuel injector o-rings.
The grommets have nothing to do with maintaining fuel pressure
or preventing leaks - the fuel injector o-rings maintain
fuel pressure and prevent leaks.
The bad news is that fuel injector o-rings are not
available separately from Volvo. New fuel injector o-rings
are only available by ordering complete fuel injectors from
Volvo ($600).
You should replace your fuel injector o-rings:
 If
your car is more than 5 years old or has over 80k miles- If
you replace your stock fuel pump with an upgraded higher-flowing
fuel pump such as a Walbro unit (leaks usually develop
immediately)
- Anytime
you remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail or intake
manifold the o-rings should be replaced as they deform
FYI - The blue grommets can be reused many times and
do not need replacement unless yours are severely deformed
or damaged.
The QBM fuel injector o-rings are premium grade Nitrile
high-temperature o-rings designed specifically for fuel
injection applications. Do not be confused - all o-rings
may look similar, but the material they are constructed
from is what is critical. These are NOT cheap 'hardware
store' rubber o-rings (which should never be used in a fuel
injected engine).
2 o-rings per fuel injector are included in each kit (10
o-rings total for 5-cyl models, 12 o-rings total for 6-cyl
models). They will fit all Volvo Bosch fuel injector.
No special tools are required, and installation takes about
30 minutes. Detailed installation instructions are included.
